    Sun Fun Draws Lifehouse

    Sun Fun Draws Lifehouse

    Josh Dawsey

Jun. 5, 2009 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- Multiplatinum-selling alternative band Lifehouse is headlining the Sun Fun Festival and will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Market Common.

The band's hit, "Hanging by a Moment," topped the alternative charts in 2001. Another hit, "You and Me," stayed on the Billboard Top 40 for over 60 weeks beginning in 2005 and stretching into 2006. Their current single, "Broken," is in the Billboard Adult Top 40.

The band is currently in the process of recording its fifth album.

Kicks! spoke with drummer Rick Woolstenhulme about the band's recent activities and its goal for the future.

Question -- How did you come up with your name?

Answer -- The name of the band isn't some long story. We had other names, but they were already taken by Web sites. This was a name we came up with after three or four names were taken.

    Q. -- So what's the band been up to lately?

    A. -- Lately this process has been slightly different than our previous records. We're making a new record, and we normally do a two-year touring cycle on an album. ... We're working on a record, and during the recording, we'll record for two or three weeks, go out and perform, and come back and work some more. We think it keeps us, and everyone else, super fresh.

    Q. -- Is this an unorthodox strategy or do others do this as well?

    A. -- I don't really know. I think some bands do it, but it's certainly something we normally don't do. It keeps our fans in the loop and happy that we go out and do shows because we normally bury ourselves in a cave and record our records.

    Q. -- What's great about the new record?

    A. -- This particular record, we think, is fresh. If we cut a song and it doesn't sound fresh to us, we throw it away and start with something new. We want to have a record that every song has something new and exciting, so that when we play it live, the energy level will be high. We've had some issues going to play and not having enough up-tempo songs.

    Q. -- Are you trying to re-create your image as a band?

    A. -- We are what we are. When the four of us get into a room, whatever ingredients are put into the soup brings our product. We're just trying to do something new, but we are what we are.

    Q. -- How does your band go about coming up with songs and ideas for songs?

    A. -- There's many different ways. The process is definitely not textbook. We've literally went to lunch, came back and started jamming on an idea and made it a song. Some songs just unfold while we're jamming. We're not the type of band that has other people write songs for us. The song part is who we are. A lot of people say they connect with us because we write about real-life experiences. There are so many avenues.

    Q. -- Are your songs typically inspired by real-life events from band members?

    A. -- Most of our songs come from a place, either in our lives or the lives of others. We never write a song to try to get it to connect. If we don't feel it, we don't force it.

    Q. -- What's your goal for this record and the future?

    A. -- We want to put out four hits, but we want however many songs end up on the record to be good, memorable songs. We want to record this album like its the last album we're going to ever record. And we just hope our dream comes true and we sell out arenas.

    Q. -- What's your favorite song the band has ever recorded?

    A. -- A lot of my favorites haven't technically been radio singles. A track called "Wash" is a really cool track. It might not have been radio-friendly, but artistically, it's a really strong, powerful track.

Lifehouse would like to welcome a new member to our family!

Lifehouse would like to welcome a new member to our family!

  • There has been some discussion on our boards lately on weather or not our guitar player Ben Carey is an official member of Lifehouse.  To clear things up, the answer is yes, and we have been a four piece for some time.  He is an amazing guitar player and family to us.  So there it is, welcome Ben!

    Anvil

    Hey yall,

we went to a premier of the movie "Anvil, the story of Anvil" last night and we must say that it is one of the greatest documentaries of our time.  Just encouraging you all to check out the showings.  Tomorrow at the nuart in LA and the angelica theater in NY. The band is going to be doing a Q&A after the 715 show on Friday and Saturday, and they will intro the 945 showing.
They are kick ass and if you enjoy metal (or not) you are in for a treat.
